“We Do Things Differently Here”: Troubling Notions of “Professionalism” in Professional Writing
This speaker discusses their experiences creating and implementing a professional writing minor at a small women’s college. The speaker discusses their choices and dilemmas in creating and building a professional writing minor with a diverse student body and a curriculum situated deeply in the liberal arts. The speaker talks about how they engaged a cultural rhetorical approach to understanding professional writing as well as some of the unexpected outcomes of putting the embodied orientations of the students first, including projects about professional writing for cam girls, a freelance tarot reading service, and discussions about pushing back against systems of power through professional dress. The talk ends with a discussion of the implications of resisting traditional “professional” writing, dwelling on the feminist potential that comes with being open to messy situations.
