Feminist Community Activism: The Dress Profesh Gallery
This exhibit focuses on the work of the activist gallery Dress Profesh (www.dressprofesh.com) as an example of feminist community activism in digital spaces. Drawing on work from Carmen Rios, Eileen Greene, and Ruth Rubenstein, Dress Profesh works from the premise that all dress codes, whether implicit or explicitly stated, are racist, cis sexist, sizeist, ageist, and classist. The gallery features user submitted photos and text that showcase the ways that people work within and against dress codes.
This interactive media installation will feature an overview from the creator with an explanation of how and why she started the gallery, as well as an invitation for participants to reflect on how they perform “professional” with a focus on the implications that that performance has for reinforcing institutional systems of power. Finally, participants will be invited to participate in a pop up photo booth where they can create their own submissions to the gallery.
